Designer Caroline Ellen's jewelry is at once modern, luxurious and timelessly classic. For the New York City native, designing jewelry is an art form akin to sculpture: hands-on and intense. "My father was a violinist and my mother had a passion for dance. From them I learned early on that the process of creating is as important as the creation itself." Working out of her NYC studio, Caroline formulates her own alloys to create special colors of gold and handcrafts each piece of jewelry. Whether sketching or working at her bench, she is always imagining who will wear each piece. Caroline's work is always identifiable by its unique, hand-finished patina and classically inspired shapes. Caroline's design philosophy is to find beauty in simplicity--each piece is handmade and hand finished, usually in 20 or 22 karat gold--Caroline is particularly drawn to unusually bright stones, such as fancy sapphires and light-colored emeralds, and to the rich color of high-karat gold, and each hand finished piece has Caroline's unique satin finish. Her pieces are stunningly gorgeous and eye-catching, and in honor of Mother's Day, we decided to interview Caroline--we believe that a piece by her would be truly perfect for a gift for mom!

This week, in honor of her trunk show on Saturday in Larchmont, we sat down with the wonderfully talented Brooklyn-based Rosanne Pugliese. We are obsessed with her subtle, light-as-a-feather jewelry, hand-made with the richest hammered gold and saturated and unique stones, which is all at once classic, modern, and luxurious. The majority of Rosanne's collection is handmade in 22k gold, in a small artisan workshop in NYC -- even the simple hoops are worked one piece at a time by hand. Rosanne uses classic, elegant proportions. But she keeps a certain earthy rawness by using gentle finishing techniques and unusual gemstones, like aquamarines that look like little chunks of the sky... or nuggets of color that are rough, assymetrical, and utterly sophisticated. -What is your favorite piece of jewelry? I am fortunate to be able to switch what is the favorite very often! Have some amazing green tourmaline rectangular "bars" that I am working on, and a bezel set "east/west" ring is my best piece right now. We would love to give you all the opportunity to peek behind the curtain of Peridot, into the minds and lives of our unbelievably talented designers. Kicking off our designer Q&A series, we sat down with the lovely and oh-so-talented Anne Sportun. Based out of Toronto, Anne seeks to translate the subtle beauty of organic forms in nature into her work. Her pieces combine the precious with the everyday, resulting in effortlessly sophisticated work that every woman looks wonderful in. -What is your favorite piece of jewelry? From my one of a kind work, I have a large round champagne coloured diamond I adore. It is set in a channel halo in white gold. It makes my heart skip a beat each time I wear it. My other piece of favorite jewellery from my production work is my large Stardust ring in white gold—I wear it on my right hand middle finger. -What is your guilty pleasure? Cheese, I would choose it over chocolate. -What are you currently reading? The Goldfinch, by Donna Tartt. -Favorite movie? Face Off or The Italian Job…I like car chases! -What was the first piece you ever designed? The first metal pieces I ever made were in my Dad’s workshop in the basement of our home.
